Almost every graduate has something he or she rues when they look back at their college/university life. And if you’re still in school, know that you may also experience this after you graduate. Anyway, knowing and doing these five things could save you from such post-college regrets:
- Start Some Business:
This is not necessarily about making profit alone. It’s more about the sales experience and negotiation skills you acquire in the process. These and other skills you gain through campus entrepreneurship would go a long way to help your career. - Learn To Save/Invest Money:
Your parents won’t be giving you as much as they would if you were in school. After graduation, or perhaps after your National Service, you’re going to “be on your own” even if you live with your parents. Depending on your parents for survival, even if you wish to, would become complicated. In most cases, you won’t have the room to rely on them for survival. And saving and/or investing while in school gives you a foundation to be self-reliant. - Consciously Live Like The CV You Wish To Have After School:
After you have graduated, how would you want your job-seeking Resume or CV to look like? Whatever your answer is, you can consciously build that CV while in school. Just be intentional about your target CV content, and spend your four/three years in school building it. Write your CV with your school life. Attend workshops and seminars, develop your skills, take up professional courses, learn extra languages, volunteer for one or two organizations, be part of an association that helps build your career, write articles, etc. - Try To Graduate With A Very Good Class:
No matter what people say, you might need a good Class someday. Graduating with a good Class gives a good first impression about you to recruiters who probably have little time but too many applications to deal with. The point is, just like skills and experiences, good grades can sometimes be why you’ll miss out on certain opportunities. So if you can, graduate with very good grades. Even if you won’t use your grades, it’s wise to try to make good grades; you might regret you didn’t make a good Class, and that would be too late. - Your Mates Are Future Leaders, Network With Them And Other People As well:
Your school days are often the best moments to forge lasting connections with your colleagues. You’re probably going to need a hand from some of your mates. Some of them could become your best business partners and clients, so build relationships with as many people as possible whiles you’re in college/university. The reality is, if you have a good network, you will one day get access to things that money can’t acquire. Quality relationship is key, build more of it before you graduate.
In conclusion, four or three years spent in college is too much time for just a degree. The certificate alone isn’t enough for that long period. You can do more. So garner more achievements before you graduate.
From Tertiary Minds, we wish you all the best in your endeavors. We wish you great career success as well.
